GEOGRAPHY

Lithuania, the country of northeastern Europe, the southernmost and largest of the three Baltic States. The country is bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the southwest and the Baltic Sea to the west. Its capital is Vilnius, the city where we are going for a semester.

VILNIUS : A CAPITAL

In 2019, there were just under 550,000 inhabitants (slightly more than Lyon). But when we talk about the surface of the city, it is huge: 401 square kilometers. Not very telling ? By way of comparison, Paris "only" covers 105 square kilometers.

With some research we learned that the differences in landscape between the outskirts and the city center were striking in Vilnius. With its 401 square kilometers, the city of Vilnius also includes lakes and forests.

TIME DIFFERENCE

Lithuania has a one hour difference with France. When it is noon in Paris, it is 1 pm in Vilnius.

WEATHER

Lithuania, in Lithuanian, is called Lietuva... that is to say country of the rain. It doesn't rain a lot, but the weather changes very quickly. Thus, it can be very sunny, and an hour later, it will rain heavily.

Rain, snow, greyness... but also and above all a beautiful red sun as we could see on many pictures.

Our mentors taught us that in winter, it's cold, but it remains quite bearable. It snows from mid-November to March. For the few really cold weeks, you need to bring thermal underwear/warm tights, a good pair of gloves, a hat or headband and a good jacket. The temperature can drop to -20°C.
